Gregor the Overlander

How is it that so much time can go by in a blink of an eye?  This year has truly flown for me.  It's been a while since I posted some of the great books I have read.  I have to admit, it is a tough thing to do during a busy school year, but there is a book I read recently I would recommend to everyone.  The book is Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins.  This is a great science fiction book about a boy and his system on a journey underground.  It's a story of courage, bravery and perseverance.  I highly recommend it as a read-aloud for 2nd graders and possible an independent book for kids in 3rd and above.

Summer's Almost Done!

Summer is almost over and I have had read some really great books!  Over the last few weeks I have been on vacation so I spent my airplane time reading some books that have to do with teaching and education.  Nothing that students would like, but I loved them.  I love reading about new things teachers and principals can do so kids like you can learn!

I hope you had a great time reading books.  I am reading one more book that was loaned to me by a Teed student.  It is called Midnight for Charlie Bone.  She said she loved it so I am hoping it is a good one.  Have any of you read it?

Happy reading!

Do you wish you could have a special power?  Well this book is all about a very special family with powers called their Savvy.  Each person in the family earns thair own savvy on their 13th birthday.  This is an adventure that takes the reader on a great journey through some funny situations.  I'm not quite done, but I wanted to share because it's soooo good!

Harry Potter - final movie this Friday!

I cannot tell you how excited I am to see the final Harry Potter movie.  I have been a fan of the Harry Potter books for over 14 years.  It all began when my oldest son was in the 3rd grade and the first Harry Potter book came out.  He and I read the first several books together over the years.  As he got older I would read, then he would read, or we would finish a book and then share it. The final book came out about 4 years ago I believe, and I remember reading the monster in just 2 days.  Although my son is now grown, I love looking back on those great memories.

If you have not read the books, but have seen the movies, I would HIGHLY recommend you also read the series.  This is one of the most amazingly written sets of books I have ever read.  The vocabulary and the descriptions are just fantastic!  I also recall reading the first book to the 3rd grade class I was teaching at the time.  We would come to the end of a chapter which signaled it was time to move on in most classes.  I would reluctantly put the book away and get the class going on their next assignment.  I remember eagerly anticipating recess time so the kids would go outside and I could pull out the book and read ahead.  I was so excited and anxious to see what would happen next.  It was just awesome.

Pick up the first book today and give it a shot.  It is completely worth it, I promise you!!!

The Magicians by Lev Grossman (the Harry Potter for adults)

I am currently reading another book recommended to me by my son, Kyle called The Magicians by Lev Grossman.  So far it has been an excellent read.  I would recommend it for teens and adults.  The reason I am posting this is because I thought when I first started it that it would be for kids as well, but I'm thinking older kids for sure.  One of the book descriptions calls it 'Harry Potter for adults'.  Just wanted you all to know I am still reading!!  Are you???  Tell me about it by clicking the tab above.

The Hunger Games Trilogy

I loved this series so much I read all three books in 4 days!!  It is a great read for anyone about 11 or 12 years and up.  Many friends I know have enjoyed it just as much as young adults.  Highly recommend you picking up a copy (or downloading to your Kindle like I did) and check it out.
